Hello everyone!
Well it has been a while since I updated the blog. We have been very busy.
Our trip to the Atlanta Zoo was fabulous. Unfortunately Ivan the gorilla had passed away in August. We did not know this until after we booked the trip. However we saw where he lived and learned a lot about gorillas. The students also learned a lot about other animals. We are studying vertebrates and invertebrates. We are also learning about different environments, and if they are herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. I feel students learn so much outside the classroom. We had great conversations. I truly had a great time and so did the students.
Thanks for participating in October Family Month and our Thanksgiving Lunch.
The Book Fair is still going on until Wednesday, November 14, 2012.
We are starting a can food drive this week until Thanksgiving. Please send in cans, and nonperishable foods. It is a contest. Let's help those who need it. Thanks.
We will finish the book The One and Only Ivan and finish blogging with Mr. Columbo’s third grade class in Massachusetts this week. The students have enjoyed this activity and connecting with other third graders.
Reading - Unit 2 reading test this week. We will also finish reading The One and Only Ivan. The students will read Sarah Plain and Tall in class and for homework.

Dear Parents,
Thanks for the parents who have come in for a visit and read to our class. We have really enjoyed it. Please remember you can come have lunch with your child this month any day. If you would like to come in and read or do an activity there are still some time slots available. Send in a note and let me know when you can come in. We would love it.
Our class is saving Box Tops. We are trying to collect 1,000 for the year. We almost have 300. The child who sends them in gets recognition. We send them in immediately and then we chart it on our class chart. Thanks for helping us with this endeavor.
Yes you can send in the money for the field trip. We finally received approval. The students are really enjoying the book, The One and Only Ivan. I am reading this book to the class. We are also blogging with a class in Massachusetts. It is a third grade class and the teacher’s name is Mr. Columbo’s class. Our students are commenting about the book we are reading and they are also writing and commenting on other subjects. I believe they are learning how to write letters, commenting, and developing some friendships at the same time. This is a great learning opportunity for our students and Mr. Columbo’s class.
As you know we are going on a field trip next Tuesday to the Atlanta Zoo. Thanks to all of you who wanted to chaperone. Space is very limited on the bus. This trip coincides with the book we are reading, The One and Only Ivan. The book is fiction, however it is about a real gorilla who lived at the Atlanta Zoo. Our students will be able to communicate with other classes who are reading this book and let them know they visited where Ivan lived. Thank you for allowing your child to experience this wonderful activity. This visit also allows students to learn more about animals and their habitats. We are learning about vertebrates and invertebrates in science.
The Social Studies “My Dream Bedroom” projects were fabulous. Thanks for assisting your child with this great project. They were so excited to share their project. Very well done.
This week is “Red Ribbon Week”, just say no to drugs. We are having activities all week. The students brought home a paper last week with the daily activities listed on it. We will also write it in the homework agenda daily. Let’s have lots of participation. There is a daily contest for each grade level. Let’s show the school we have spirit and we are saying no to drugs.
I sent home a game called “Close to One Hundred”. We learned how to play this on math night. Thanks for the parents who could attend. For those of you who could not attend, you can play this game at home with your child. This is great practice for learning many math skills. Let your child teach you how to play. We will have another math night again.
On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, I will have a small party for Halloween. If you would like to volunteer and come in and help me please let me know. I will let two parents come in. I do not need anything I will provide all the goodies.
Have a great week.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Roberts

Weekly Letter
Hello everyone. I hope you had a good weekend.
This week I am changing a few things. I have found out that the students are not doing their homework. I believe they are confused and do not understand what they are to do daily. I am going to have them write the homework down each morning and have them put what they need in their binder in the correct places every morning. Homework is a very important part of school. First, it reviews what we have learned and allows them to practice. Second, it helps them learn responsibility. They have a job to do and they need to learn do it. They need to take it home, complete, and put it back in their binder to bring to school. This has been a difficult concept for many students in my class this year, so I am trying to fix the situation. Not doing homework is not an option. Students need to learn to study and to be responsible for these things. It is my job to help them get organized and to learn to study. I hope this helps this week. I will do this for a few weeks and if this does not work I will try something else. I will check their agenda daily and sign. Parents could you please check to make sure they did their homework and sign their agenda.
October is Family month at Fultondale. This means you can come to school on Fridays and teach the students something, read a book, or do something else. I will send home a form soon and you need to let me know what you would like to share with the students. I hope many of you are able to visit. This is a great opportunity for our students. I know you parents have many talents. I can not wait.
Parents thanks for all you are doing to help your student have a successful year.
You may email, or write a note as needed. My email address is troberts@jefcoed.com.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Roberts

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thanks for coming to Open House. If you were not able to come I sent home a copy of what we discussed along with the grading parameters.
The students are settling in nicely. We have started reading and math groups. We will start intervention at 8:30 to 9:00 daily for reading. This week we will do a book report in class and students will start doing book reports to show accountability of what they are reading at home and or at school.
In math we are working on adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers with and without regrouping. Please continue to work on addition or subtraction facts.
In Science we are learning about plants. The students are growing lima bean seeds. In Social Studies we ordered a Social Studies paper which connects to the Alabama course. I am very excited to use this tool to promote Social Studies.
Please look at the new tab at the top of the page. I added a spelling, language, and writing tab. I will post the new words and skills each week.
We will have our first PTA Meeting September 11, 2012 in the cafeteria. Please plan to attend. The PTA is a wonderful organization that supports our school in many ways. If you have not joined, please do.
Have a great week. If you have any concerns please contact me by e-mail, note in the agenda, or contact the school. My e-mail address is troberts@jefcoed.com.

Dear Parents or Guardians,
Hello! I am enjoying getting to know each student in my class. They are delightful, energetic, and eager learners.
Thank you so much for all the school supplies. If you have not paid for the National Geographic, please send in money by September 13, 2012 so I can order them for the class. This weekly reader is so important. It helps the students to read and use informational text.
If you have not looked at my classroom blog, please do. I am going to explain the types of things I will be doing this week in my class. The home page will have a weekly letter, and to the left there is a schedule of dates of important events. Other tabs include a homework tab, discipline procedures, and a games tab. If you click on these you can view what is for homework and descriptions of games I have taught or will teach, or web sites you can visit to assist your child.
The students took a baseline reading test last week. This provided me with information so I could put them in reading groups. I will continue to monitor and adjust to meet their needs as I get to know each student better. They will take a reading test on the story of the week on Thursday of each week. They will take it on the computer. I will send home the test scores. Students will also need to read for twenty minutes each night and record what they read on a reading log. They can read the reading story for two nights and record this as their reading. They can check books out from my library anytime they wish. Reading is very important. Please listen to your child read occasionally, ask questions and review with them as necessary. Parents must sign the reading log each night.
We have started math also. I will send home a note if your child needs to practice math facts. Students need to score a 90% or better on fact tests before they can go to the next set of facts. I will give them a fact test every Wednesday. I will review addition and subtraction facts through out the year.
Homework is very important. I have the students write their homework in their agenda on Monday for the week. I will check for accuracy and sign. Please check students homework and sign their agenda nightly.
The Fultondale Folder will be our communication folder for the year. It will come home every Monday. In this folder you will see their class work and tests. You will also see a behavior sheet. Please sign for the week and preview the papers. Please return the papers and folder. I will send the papers back home at the end of each nine weeks.
Third Grade will have Open House on September 4 at 6:00. I hope you will be able to attend. This meeting will answer many questions including grading parameters, third grade curriculum and expectations of a third grader. This is a very informative meeting.
I am looking forward to a fabulous, exciting year of learning with your child. If you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me at troberts@jefcoed.com. Have a great week.

August 20, 2012 First Day of School
Dear Parent(s) Guardian(s),
Welcome to the 2012 - 2013 school year. I have a lot of exciting activities planned. Your child will work in groups to complete some activities, projects, and assignments and at other times, your child will work independently. It is very important for your child to understand that as a third grade student, he/she will be expected to complete all assignments and turn them in on time. Your child should know that you and I will be working as a team to ensure the best education possible.
I will expect students to come to class prepared. This means students should have supplies as neccessary. In preparing students for the future I will expect them to accept the consequences for their actions.
Weekly homework and class work will be assigned and should be completed by the students. Homework is necessary for reinforcement of the skills learned during the day. Points will be deducted if turned in one day late. No assignments will be accepted if they are over one day late, unless lateness is due to an excused absence. Assignments will be written in the agenda on Mondays. I will initial and check for accuracy for the first nine weeks. Parents please check your child's homework and initial in agenda that homework was completed. This is a must for the first nine weeks.
Weekly folders ( Fultondale Folder) with current grades and discipline will be sent home each Monday. The parent will need to sign sheet in folder and return folder with papers to school with your child the following day.
I will be using this blog as a communication tool. My weekly letter will be posted here with news, classroom activities, and pictures. My classroom blog is troberts@blogspot.com. I will let you know how to join. I believe this will be an effective tool for all of us to use to communicate.
I am looking forward to an excellent, productive, and exciting school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at troberts@jefcoed.com or call the school at 379 - 3450 and make and appointment to meet with me.
We are going to have a fabulous year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Roberts
