Math War

Addition and Subtraction Math War: Use a deck of cards. Take out the kings, queens, and jacks. The ace will be used as a one. Shuffle the cards and deal them all out.  Stack your cards in a pile face down. Each player turns over two cards. Each player adds their numbers together. Who ever has the highest amount wins all the cards. If their is a tie the players turn over two more cards. Once again who ever has the highest amount wins all the cards. Play continues until a player runs out of cards. This game is good because the cards have objects that the player can count.
Example: A player turns over an eight and a seven. The player puts eight in their head and touches and counts the objects on the seven card to get the number "15". With subtraction the player says the highest number card eight and touches and counts backwards to get the answer "1".

Later on the students can use these cards to practice multiplication.

Have fun!!
